River-Sea and Short Sea Shipping: Hinterland Transport with Shallow Water Effects

These proceedings represent a collection of papers delivered at a one-day Workshop on River-Sea and Short Sea Shipping: Hinterland Transport with Shallow Water Effects. The event was held on 26th of September 1997 at the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg, one of the major inland ports of Europe, if not the world. The importance of Duisburg as an inland port made it entirely appropriate as a venue for this event and WEGEMT is pleased to acknowledge the work and support of the local organisers in the Institute of Ship Technology, the support of many local industry sponsors and the Lady Mayor, Mrs Zeiling, from the city of Duisburg who provided the opening address.

The papers cover aspects of manoeuvrability, port-ship interface, logistics, cargo loading and unloading, and look at innovative concepts and Fast Ships. As such they provide an excellent reference of current systems and work in progress which looks at future trends and systems. The audience at the event was strongly represented by companies working in the inland and short sea shipping sector. With great emphasis being placed on Short Sea Shipping as a serious alternative to Road/Rail transportation, and the expectation that Shipping will play a key role in transport intermodality, we hope this timely publication will be of interest to you, your company or your reserachers if you come from a university. WEGEMT has also published course proceedings on "Ships for Coastal and Inland Waters (Design, Building and Operation)" and as complimentary publications, they provide a valuable source of information on this important aspect of shipping.
